Defining Problems and Visualizing Solutions

During my 4-months design internship at RBC, I worked as a UX/UI Design Intern in charge of a new project called RADAR.

  1. I have led the design of a project that would be internally used for assisting global RBC employees during / after COVID-19 pandemic.

  2. I have conducted accessible design + visual design research on projects to increase inclusivity.

  3. Created business logics on UX flows to communicate with stakeholders.

  4. Collaborated and participated in a wide variety of cross-media projects involving branding, cooperative illustration library, wireframing, and prototyping for MVP presentations.

creating Visual Guidelines

Visual guidelines on Figma files with instructions were created for sharing with the team and developers. By creating clear guidelines, it made it easier to communicate and share my ideas more directly.

I have followed the existing visual branding and created a few flexible elements by following Google’s Material Design Guidelines and Android Design Rules for cross-platform purposes.

Accessible Design Research

I have focused on the inclusivity and accessibility of colors and icons by designing potential users using the app. I have tested different color combinations that convey urgent messages and tried with symbols or patterns to differentiate the user's situation.

This allowed me to be dive into inclusive design and usability testings and challenged me to create the most accessible visual guideline that targets users in all age ranges.

design & market research

I actively researched and tuned on how the world was using applications during the pandemic. I created a document focusing on user reviews, concerns, UX flow of applications, simplicity, pros+cons of the application, UI design, etc. I have reported my research to my project manager. We have sent feedback on what would work and what would not to developers and stakeholders.

The images below are a glimpse of the research I have done.

Progresses throughout the internship

It was an excellent opportunity to join the project from the very start of the finalized publishing process. All the processes were very enjoyable and fun to reflect and see the changes and improvements throughout the term. The experience as an intern at RBC was precious. It made me learn a lot about teamwork and business logistics behind a product.

Roxanne Nicolussi

Senior Manager, Solution Design Lead

“SoHyun was a remarkable addition to the Innovation team during her Co-op term in the summer of 2020. Tasked with helping to design UI flows on an extremely challenging and fast-paced project, she showed her skills of turning broad ideas into clear experiences. Although the project pivoted many times, SoHyun strived under pressure and took the lead when necessary. Throughout the experience, I witnessed SoHyun partner with and collaborate across disciplines. She always showed up with great ideas and a positive attitude. SoHyun continued to wow us all, and I'm certain we will continue to wow in her future endeavors.”

Innovation Challenges

During my internship, I have attended two significant Innovation Business Challenges by collaborating with interns with different backgrounds in different departments. We have focused on RBC's business problem and narrowed it down with business strategists by having interviews and surveys with employers or charities to have a strong connection between them.

With mentors, I was in charge of the overall design and business strategies to find problems and solutions with surveys and close the gap. We have brainstormed different programs and promotions that RBC would be willing to offer for the community.
